Sounds more like social engineering than anything else.

Actually, in the past (honestly I don't know about now), hotmail.com has been quite easy to exploit so people could actually "hack" their way into their databases/someone's personal email. Just throwing that out there to say that it could've very well been an actual hack.
But then again, we do live in a world with people. and ppl r le dum.

Actually, the not-so-smart people use ISP email. What happens when you switch providers? <Poof> your email address is gone. With services like hotmail you have an email account whether you have an internet account or not.

I also have a Hotmail account and Guild Wars had never sent me and email with my login or password. Just a confirmation that I have created an account. Besides, my email has never been hacked. Only fools get their emails hacked.

Personally i use a Gmail account myself, but i was wondering what exactly is the difference between that and hotmail that makes Gmail so "safe"?

Not much really. Gmail just has much better organisation, far less intrusive ads, more space, etc.

Well, I recieve my hotmail content through my email program (outlook express) so I don't get ANY ads and I can organize it filter anyway i see fit. I've also had it for 7 years and have yet to have a problem.
Anyways, people shouldn't be using the same password for everything they do online. I have different "levels" of passwords myself. My hotmail has a specific password, as does Guild Wars and my online banking. Everything else (forums, site registrations, etc) have the same passwords since they aren't really important and won't affect me in any way if they get "stolen" or hacked.
